For much of our history, we didn’t know how to write—but we knew how to read. And we read everything. We read the rivers, the rocks, the trees, the mountains.
 
But we were nomads, and when we had to move and leave everything behind, those rivers and rocks and trees and mountains we had learned to read were no longer visible and became just a memory.
 
Only one kind of writing followed us everywhere: the symbols inscribed in the sky that gave meaning to our world.
